Joye's Update 4/28/08
Well, they were right when they said everything was going to start today. First thing this morning he was put on C-pap and he breathed on that for about 4 hours. I then did his range of motion exercises that the physical therapists have "trained" me to do. Then they tried him on a trach collar which essentially is when they take the vent tube off his trach and put a little thing on their that just provides a little oxygen in the tube and he is to breath 100% on his own with no air being pushed in. He was able to do this for 10 minutes, which is really good. It's very hard to breath on your own when you can't feel yourself breathing. They then put him back on C-pap and he was able to continue on that for just a little while until he was too tired, so they put him back on the vent. Then the physical and occupational therapists came in and placed him in what they call the Cadillac chair. They lay the chair flat like a gurney and they slide him from his bed on to it. Then they slowly put the chair into a chair-like position. They monitor his blood pressure very closely throughout the exercise as it's very common for it to go up or down, and his rose as he was put into a sitting position. He was able to sit in the chair for 15 minutes and then they had to put him back in his bed because of the blood pressure issue. This is quite common, and they will just have to keep trying until they can get him sitting upright while keeping his blood pressure stable. It's all just going to take a while. My call to the Craig Hospital in Colorado was returned today as well. We are having Andrews medical records sent to them and we have involved his insurance case worker to see if a negotiation can take place with them and the hospital. So, please pray that all that works out so that we can get Andrew evaluated. We'll start over tomorrow with the same regimen and this will be the routine for a while with hopeful improvement. As always, we so appreciate all your posts and prayers and your birthday wishes. God bless you all. Joye

Well Langley, keep up the good work on your breathing, this will get easier, just remember even though you may not be able to feel like your getting the air in your lungs and this becomes tiresome. You are making a huge difference. Your lungs are getting what they need for you to become strong. Every sensation you get is progress. Don't get frustrated. I know you have the strength of an ox, so keep on working... I would hate to see you go so far away for your rehab, but what ever it takes to get you up and going again is what matters. Still hoping I can come see ya soon. Stay determined as I know you are. I continue to pray for you daily, nightly you name it, it is all the time.
love ya and miss ya lots

Joye~ That's great news that he was able to breathe on his own! Good to see that he is finally able to focus on the physical therapy part of his recovery. While it is going to be demanding and rigorous, Drew possesses the determination to conquer any challenge.
Craig Hospital looks like a great facility. Hopefully after they review his records, they will call with good news about an evaluation.
Hang in there Joye, and stay strong. I dont know how you do it, but keep it up!

Sgt Langley, Well you are not missing that much in the kitchen. Same old thing, roaches have come to great us for the summer. Flies are happy to see us too. Yuck, but they are getting exterminated soon. We started buffing the floor, and it is looking pretty good. It's a lot of work for them right now because it hasn't been done in a while. I havn't messed up the paperwork at all, haha. Flores is back in the kitchen. Morales had a couple of weeks of annual leave so he is fresh again. Rodriguez is his easy going self. Carlon is taking care of business, he has everything going effeciently. Hardly seen McCarty much lately, but I know she asks me if I know anything about you that she doesn't know. Luna is his usual self, he started going to the chiropractor for his back and hip. He seems to be feeling good from it. He has to go three times a week for another few weeks. I have been busy with my life and kids, and all that stuff. They are still working on 32nd and Araby and I'm about sick of it already. I have to leave my house at 10:30! Sgt Valencia is checking up on us, and keeping us in check. He has paid a lot of attention to us and offered a lot of help, and making sure everything gets done. He is still not you and we will take you back happily. I hope you keep your spirits up, stay positive. We are all thinking of you, and understand that we can't see you. You are in our hearts and we will be patient so that you can focus on your job ahead. Thank you to Joye for keeping us all informed, it is very important to us and we appreciate it. God bless, Kohmetscher
