Joye's Update 5/13/08

Andrew had a very busy day today. He did a vent wean early this morning, and did very well on that. Soon after, he had his trach cuff deflated (a balloon type thing in his throat that keeps air from going in or coming from his nose or mouth) so that he can start to get used to having it open to begin talking and eating. It will be very hard for him to get used to the feeling of having air come through his mouth and nose from the ventilator . . . it will take time and practice to get used to this. It was weird to hear his voice for the first time since April 4th, although most of the sounds coming from him were from him coughing. Then he went through a very intense neuro assessment, and finally he was lifted out of bed with a special lift and placed into a wheel chair for 1 hour. While in the chair, me and his nurse gave him a tour of the hospital. Once he was put back in bed, he was very tired and his head was hurting pretty good. This is normal as he had extra pressure on his neck while being up. He was supposed to have another vent wean at that time, but they postponed it until tonight due to the headache. He's improving with every weaning. Today was very cold . . . it snowed early this morning and rained the better part of the day. It's clearing up now, and it's supposed to be warmer tomorrow. Well that's all for now . . . I'll check in again tomorrow. Good Night and God Bless. Joye

Big Dog,

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. I just heard about it last week and yesterday I found out that your wife had a blog updating everyone on your progress. I spent all of last night catching up on your progress and there is no doubt in my mind that you’ll walk out of Craig’s.

Although I have faith in God, I’ve never considered myself to be a very religious person, but ever since I found about your situation, I’ve prayed for you nightly. Don’t give up the fight! With your faith in God, your hard work and the support of your family and friends, you’re going to beat this, Big Dog.

Joye, I’ve never had opportunity to meet you but I’m glad to know that you’re in Drew’s life. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to keep everyone updated, you really are heaven sent.

Big Dog, I know you’re not use to me being all sentimental but next time I’ll crack a joke on you here and there, maybe even get you on your Ug Boots! Now, I know that Brotha’s don’t like the cold weather, so hurry up, do your thing and get back to Yuma!

Stay Strong Sucka Fish,

Ozuna

Drew, it sounds like you are moving right along. I miss you so much. I think of you everyday and know that you are on the road to recovery. I pray for you both. I was wondering if you got to take your ughs for the cold weather up there in Colorado. Hang in there. Love always, Kathy

Joye & Drew, I felt like an idiot after talking with you today. I had no clue that my long lost friend and former roommate had surgery, let along was going through a terrible temporary set back. Drew, I know you are a strong willed individual and you WILL get better. I was so ecstatic to see you upon my return to Yuma after 14 years, just to know that God planned my return and my fortune to pass by your home and see you in the yard. Your smile said it all, welcome home friend, welcome back to a familiar place and a familiar face. Drew, we still have old times to discuss and new times to discover as "old men." I didn't return to Yuma to have my friend hanging out in Colorado, while I suffered in the heat once more. Joye, thank you for being the woman you are and I will keep each of you in my prayers. Drew, I know you will get better, simply because of who you are. You have always accepted the challenges and won. I expect the same once more. Please let Nora and I know if there is anything we can do. I miss your smile and laughter old friend, but I look forward to seeing you back home soon.
